Frequently asked questions

What does asbestos removal cost?

An asbestos survey costs on average € 200 to € 500. Removing an asbestos roof (corrugated sheets) runs roughly € 500 to € 7,000 per job, depending on surface, height and disposal. Indoor asbestos usually costs € 500 to € 3,500 and a small emergency clean-up after damage € 400 to € 2,000. For commercial buildings and demolition, project work applies from roughly € 12 to € 25 per m². When removing, almost always count the survey and the demolition notification as separate, preceding steps. These are guide prices; your exact price follows from a certified company's quote.

Can I remove asbestos myself?

Usually not. As a rule, asbestos may only be removed by a certified company. There is a limited exception where a private individual may remove a small amount of bonded asbestos themselves, but only after notifying the municipality and under strict conditions — and in many situations it is not allowed. The municipality decides what is permitted in your case. So never assume you may do it yourself: check with your municipality first, and when in doubt have a certified company do the work.

Is an asbestos survey mandatory?

In almost all cases where asbestos is removed — and for renovation or demolition — an asbestos survey by a certified firm is required first. That report records where which asbestos is and in what risk class, and is usually the basis for the demolition notification and the removing company's quote. When in doubt, ask your municipality what exactly is required in your situation.

Do I need a demolition notification?

For most asbestos jobs you must submit a demolition notification to the municipality beforehand, usually based on the survey report. The municipality checks the notification and may set conditions. The exact requirements and timelines differ per municipality and per situation — a certified company knows this route and can guide you through it, but also check with your municipality yourself.

How do I recognise asbestos?

Asbestos cannot be identified with certainty by eye. It is often found in corrugated roofs of sheds and garages, in old vinyl flooring and the adhesive beneath it, in board around stoves and boilers, and in pipe lagging — mostly in buildings from before 1994. Only a certified investigation with sampling gives certainty. Suspect asbestos? Don't work on it, don't break or sand it, and request an asbestos survey.

How dangerous is asbestos?

Asbestos is dangerous when fibres are released and inhaled — which happens mainly when asbestos-containing material is broken, sawn, drilled, sanded or weathered. As long as bonded asbestos is intact and undamaged, the risk is limited. That is exactly why working on and removing it must be done by a certified company that takes measures to prevent spread. Never clear up broken asbestos yourself: don't sweep or vacuum it, keep people and pets away, and leave the area undisturbed.

Is there a subsidy for asbestos removal?

The national subsidy scheme for asbestos roofs ended a few years ago. Sometimes provinces or municipalities still offer a scheme, loan or other support, and this differs per place and changes regularly. We therefore deliberately quote no figures — ask your municipality or province whether anything is available in your situation.

How long does asbestos removal take?

The removal itself is often done in a day for a single shed roof, but the lead time is set by the preliminary steps: first the asbestos survey, then the demolition notification to the municipality with its waiting period, and only then scheduling the work. So don't count on removal from one day to the next; request quotes well in advance.

Are the companies certified?

Yes. Asbestos removal may as a rule only be done by a company with the correct process certificate (SC-540), and an asbestos survey by a certified firm (SC-530). We verify Chamber of Commerce registration when a company joins and ask companies for their certification and proof of business liability insurance. Companies with recurring complaints are removed from the platform.

Is a request really free and without obligation?

Yes. Submitting a request costs nothing and commits you to nothing. You receive up to 3 quotes from certified companies and choose yourself — or no one, that's fine too. Prices and payment are arranged directly with the asbestos company. We only mediate; we carry out no survey or removal ourselves.
